RCEP Seen as Key Driver of Regional Integration and Economic Growth

KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 – The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) stands as more than just a trade agreement—it represents a powerful engine for regional cooperation, economic expansion, and global development, according to Zhu Zhibin, Deputy Director of the Xinhua Institute.

Speaking at the 2025 ASEAN-China Media and Think Tank Forum held in the capital today, Zhu characterised the RCEP through three meaningful concepts: opportunity, people’s hearts, and hope.

He explained that RCEP offers a substantial opportunity for member nations by injecting new momentum into regional development and unlocking broader pathways to economic prosperity.

“RCEP paves the way for deeper integration and collaboration across Asia-Pacific, bringing tangible benefits to economies and communities alike,” said Zhu.

He described “people’s hearts” as symbolising the growing cultural and people-to-people exchanges among member countries, fostering mutual understanding and social cohesion across borders.

Zhu also highlighted “hope” as reflected in transformational infrastructure projects like the China-Laos Railway, which he said not only enhance regional connectivity but also stimulate economic growth and uplift communities.

“These projects are emblematic of RCEP’s vision—delivering real impact to people’s lives while reinforcing regional unity,” he noted.

The ASEAN-China Media and Think Tank Forum, jointly organised by Bernama and Xinhua News Agency, gathered over 200 participants, including policymakers, media professionals, and academic leaders from across ASEAN and China. The forum serves as a platform for dialogue on key regional issues, including economic integration, digital innovation, and strategic cooperation.
