KUALA LUMPUR, March 28 (Bernama) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed deep concern over the powerful earthquake that struck central Myanmar and northern Thailand, causing significant loss of life and widespread destruction in cities including Mandalay and Bangkok.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Anwar described the situation as deeply distressing, citing reports of collapsed buildings, trapped civilians, and a rising death toll.
“We are also closely monitoring the situation in southern Yunnan, China, where tremors have been felt and structural damage has been reported,” he said.
The Prime Minister extended Malaysia’s deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives and conveyed prayers for the injured and displaced.
“Malaysia stands in unwavering solidarity with our neighbours and fellow ASEAN member states during this difficult time,” he said.
Anwar also acknowledged the state of emergency declared by authorities in Myanmar, as well as the Thai government’s move to designate Bangkok as a disaster-stricken area.
He added that Malaysia is ready to provide assistance and support any humanitarian efforts in response to the disaster.
Following the quake, Thailand’s key transit systems, including the MRT, BTS, and Airport Rail Link in Bangkok, have been suspended as authorities continue their damage assessments.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has officially declared a state of emergency in Bangkok.
