MBKS to join Virtual Earth Hour 2025 in global climate awareness effort

KUCHING (March 20): The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will be participating in Virtual Earth Hour 2025 at 8.30pm this Saturday (March 22) in conjunction with International Earth Hour.

Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the council will be joining the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS), Miri City Council (MCC), Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), and Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) in making this collective effort to raise awareness for the environment.

“This year, SRDC will be hosting the event under the theme ‘Create the Biggest Hour for Earth’.

“This is the fourth year of this initiative in our region, following previous years’ host, which included the SMC in 2022, MBKS in 2023, and MCC which hosted the event last year,” he told a press conference at MBKS Building here today.

He said the main event will be held at Sibu Jaya Public Library where Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian is expected to officiate.

“As part of our involvement, MBKS will switch off the lights at council offices, parks, and facilities for one hour to show its solidarity and commitment to this global movement.

“Several private sector entities including hotels and shopping malls under the jurisdiction of MBKS will also be joining this effort.

“Among those participating are Saradise, Kuching Park Hotel, Imperial Hotel, Vivacity Megamall, Aeroville Mall, Aeon Mall, Farley Mall, Boulevard Mall, Ibraco Berhad as well as Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, and i-CATS University College,” he said.

He called on the public to actively participate in this movement by switch off their lights at home, joining the event online, or spreading the word.

“Every small action can have a significant impact on the global effort to address climate change and protect nature.

“Earth Hour is not just about switching off the lights, but also about raising awareness, igniting conversations on the climate crisis, and taking meaningful steps toward a sustainable future for all of us,” said Wee.

Also present were Kuching South deputy mayor Dato Dr Zaiedi Suhaili and Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) president Datin Dona Drury-Wee.
