KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 (Bernama) – Malaysia is committed to strengthening the semiconductor supply chain in collaboration with ASEAN member countries, in line with its role as ASEAN Chair for 2025, said Deputy Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong.
Addressing concerns about regional competition, Liew emphasized that Malaysia does not view Vietnam, Singapore, or other ASEAN nations as rivals but as partners in fostering a resilient and integrated semiconductor ecosystem.
“Many say that Malaysia is competing with Vietnam and other neighboring countries, but in the ASEAN spirit, we do not see our regional partners as competitors,” he stated during a Dewan Negara question-and-answer session today.
Regional Collaboration for Semiconductor Growth
Liew was responding to a question from Senator Kesavadas Achyuthan Nair, who inquired about equitable economic growth among ASEAN members and Malaysia’s strategy in navigating geopolitical and global trade tensions as the 2025 ASEAN Chair.
He highlighted that Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore play critical roles in the global semiconductor industry, stressing the need for collaboration to address global challenges and supply chain disruptions.
“We aim to strengthen the supply chain so that, in the event of any global disruptions, we can respond collectively,” he added.
With ASEAN emerging as a key player in the global semiconductor sector, Malaysia’s leadership in fostering cooperation is expected to enhance regional economic resilience and technological advancement.
