Malaysia and Japan Sign MoU in Agriculture Sector Involving Over RM25 Million Investment

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia continues to strengthen cooperation with Japan in the agricultural sector through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between several companies from both countries at Expo 2025 Osaka today.

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, in a Facebook post, stated that the MoU—estimated to involve an investment of over US$6 million (RM25.5 million)—not only promises economic gains but also enhances the resilience of the nation’s food system.

“Agriculture is not just village work. It is the future of the nation.
Let us continue working together—government, private sector, farmers, and the people—towards a resilient, innovative, and blessed Malaysia MADANI,” he said.

According to Mohamad, he was also given the opportunity to launch Sustainable Agriculture Week at the Malaysia Pavilion during the expo.

He emphasized that Malaysia’s participation at the event reflects a strong conviction that sustainable agriculture is not just an option, but a necessity.

“Imagine if one day our farmers are jobless, farmlands abandoned, and food becomes scarce. That is the warning of the future that awaits if we do not act now,” he said.

Mohamad added that Malaysia is now advancing through the National Agrofood Policy 2.0 and the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030, aimed at modernizing agriculture using technologies such as drones, the Internet of Things (IoT), and smart systems from farm to city.

“Even Tongkat Ali is being upgraded with added value to become a premium health product,” he noted.

Malaysia’s participation in Expo 2025 Osaka is led by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) and supported through a whole-of-government approach involving 21 ministries and 70 agencies.

The focus is on seven strategic sectors:

Sustainable agriculture

Renewable energy

Smart living

Green manufacturing

Industrial reform

Environmental management

The halal industry
