Earth Hour 2025: Join the World in Switching Off the Lights Tonight

KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 – Earth Hour returns tonight at 8:30 PM, inviting individuals, communities, and landmarks around the globe to switch off their lights for 60 minutes in a symbolic act of environmental awareness.

Held annually on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour aims to shine a light—by turning them off—on the urgent issues facing our planet, from climate change to biodiversity loss. This year, iconic landmarks worldwide will once again go dark for one hour to mark the occasion.

Why Earth Hour Matters
Launched by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 2007, Earth Hour began as a grassroots campaign in Sydney, Australia. On its inaugural night, more than 2.2 million people and 2,000 businesses turned off their lights in a unified call to protect the environment.

Now in its 18th year, the movement has grown into one of the world’s largest environmental campaigns, with participation from over 190 countries. It serves as a powerful reminder that collective action—even something as simple as turning off a light—can spark meaningful change.

“Earth Hour is about more than just an hour without lights. It’s a global call to action, a moment for people everywhere to reflect on how their choices affect the planet,” said a WWF representative.

How You Can Take Part
Participating is simple: switch off your lights for one hour, starting at 8:30 PM. But Earth Hour also encourages people to go beyond the switch and reconnect with the natural world.

Unplug from screens and enjoy the outdoors, meditate, stargaze, cook a zero-waste meal, or spend quality time with friends and family in candlelight. Activities like planting trees, walking in your neighborhood, or simply appreciating the sounds of nature are all meaningful ways to mark the hour.

You can also inspire others by sharing your Earth Hour experience on social media, helping to spread awareness and amplify the impact.

Earth Hour may last just 60 minutes, but its message endures: every small action matters, and together, our collective efforts can shape a more sustainable future.
