ASEAN to Introduce Standardized EV Policy, Announcement Set for Upcoming Summit – Tengku Zafrul

KUALA LUMPUR, March 20, 2025 – ASEAN member countries are working towards the implementation of a standardized electric vehicle (EV) policy, aimed at strengthening regional sustainability initiatives and accelerating the transition to clean energy.

Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz stated that discussions on harmonizing battery technology and cross-border EV charging infrastructure have already begun among senior ASEAN officials and leaders.

“The timeline and framework for this initiative will be finalized and officially announced at the upcoming ASEAN Summit,” he told reporters after officiating the ASEAN Unity Drive 2025 at Menara MITI today.

Aiming for a Unified and Sustainable EV Ecosystem
Tengku Zafrul emphasized that this initiative seeks to address concerns among EV users while fostering a more resilient regional supply chain within the automotive sector.

“A unified EV policy will allow ASEAN nations to collaborate more effectively in achieving sustainability goals,” he added.

With growing efforts to enhance green mobility and sustainable energy adoption, ASEAN’s move towards EV standardization is expected to pave the way for greater efficiency, innovation, and investment in the region’s EV industry.
