ASEAN Summit: Civil Servants Advised to Work from Home Amid Road Closures

KUALA LUMPUR, 8 May 2025 – In light of the upcoming ASEAN Summit, the Public Service Department (PSD) has advised civil servants whose commuting routes are affected by road closures in the capital to apply for work-from-home (WFH) arrangements.

The move is aimed at minimizing disruptions and ensuring the smooth organization of the summit, which will see the convergence of Southeast Asian leaders and delegates for high-level discussions. PSD Director-General Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz said the instruction is in line with the government’s flexibility policy, allowing heads of departments to approve WFH requests during the summit period.

“Department heads are urged to consider applications from officers and staff whose daily commute may be disrupted due to road closures related to the ASEAN Summit,” he stated in an official circular.

The PSD emphasized that service delivery must not be compromised. Civil servants permitted to work remotely are expected to remain contactable during official working hours and fulfill their responsibilities effectively.

The ASEAN Summit, a major diplomatic event in the region, will result in the closure of several major roads in Kuala Lumpur for security and traffic management. Authorities have urged all road users to plan ahead and use alternative routes during the affected period.

The initiative also reflects the government’s continued efforts to embrace digital and flexible work cultures, which were accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic and have now been integrated into administrative practices.

For more details on road closures and the WFH policy, civil servants and the public can refer to updates from the Malaysian police and the official PSD portal.
